How to Style Texture Above a Sofa

The living room guide

The wall above a sofa is often the largest quiet surface in a living room. A woven hanging can bring detail to it without the hard outline of a frame. The goal is a composition that belongs to the room, not a photograph copied inch for inch.

Begin with the sofa and the wall.

Measure the sofa width and the clear wall above it. Look at the whole seating area: a floor lamp, tall plant or side table may shift the visual center. Compare a paper outline of the textile with the furniture before choosing a size. Our size guide explains how to account for fringe and rods.

Choose one visual idea.

For a room with patterned cushions, a quiet cord design can add texture without another strong print. Scalloped Horizon gives a 43.3-inch span of light cotton and repeating knots. If the room is mostly plain, the colored bands of Tidal Layers can introduce a clear focal point; its wide selection measures 47.2 by 31.5 inches.

Connect a color already in the room.

Pick up a tone from a cushion, a ceramic piece or a wood finish. Ochre Diamond uses small warm accents within pale cotton, while Colorline Wave groups narrow multicolor bands above a pale fringe. A small repeated accent can feel more settled than adding an entirely new palette.

Look at the lower edge.

Fringe changes the shape of a textile. A tapered hanging leads the eye toward the center; a straight field of strands reads as a broader backdrop. Leave visible space between the textile’s lower edge and the sofa, and make sure seated people will not regularly brush against it. Decide the spacing in your actual room rather than following one fixed number.

Keep the nearby objects edited.

Let a dimensional textile have a little open wall around it. If a lamp overlaps the pattern from your usual seat, try shifting the furniture or using a narrower piece. You do not have to center the hanging on the entire wall if the seating area itself is off-center.

Check practical details before hanging.

Confirm the exact selected dimensions and whether the package includes a rod. Colorline Wave and Broad Diamond Drape are supplied without wooden sticks. Choose hardware suited to the wall and item, and follow its directions. Styling advice does not replace the instructions for your mounting hardware.

Once the outline, color and surrounding space feel balanced, let the woven detail do the rest.
